Take Action Today To Ensure A Long, Healthy Life

Why Obesity Rates are High in Children?

The obesity rates are rapidly rising for American children and health professionals, parents as well as media is talking about the adverse consequences almost every day.

President Obama and his wife Michelle have decided that government should regulate people’s diet and lives so that obesity rates among the population and especially children can be controlled. There is a campaign by government to regulate and dictate school cafeterias to serve more meals with fruits and vegetables, and less sugary soda or oily burgers.

However, this strategy largely focuses on diet and that too only during school hours. Almost no mention is made of unhealthy amount of time spent in front of television, computers which often leads to mental anxiety, stress and pre-occupation with undesirable material online.

Moreover, the time spent in front of television and computers means time missed to finish homework, get good grades and do physical exercise. Lack of commitment at school means higher anxiety and stress which can also contribute to obesity.

Therefore, it is difficult to attribute obesity to just sugary soda and fatty foods and society must look at the whole lifestyle including time spent during the day and activities performed which contribute to obesity and dullness.

Instead of watching sports, soap operas and dramas, children should be encouraged to go outside and play sports, and aspire to become part of the school hockey, baseball, football, or swimming team.

Playing a sport with other kids will lead to greater levels of physical activity, improvement in mood and mental balance, and reduce obesity.

At the same time less time will be spent in watching harmful television programs and internet gaming sites.

The Debate About Electronic Health Care Systems/Record

There is a lot of talk in the media and in political debates about creating an electronic health care system. While the experts will battle back and forth about the hows and whys of this system, the regular layperson is probably asking themselves what exactly an electronic health care system is. Here is a look at what an electronic health care system would provide.

At the moment when you go to a hospital unless that hospital is connected with your doctors or your previous stays that hospital has no previous knowledge of your past medical conditions, treatments you received or medications you might be on. Should the hospital have a need to pull any of this information up it could take hours or days to get it from one hospital system to another and in many cases involving medical care time is of the essence.  An electronic health care system would change all that.

An electronic health care system is essentially one big health care system that is completely run by one central computer. That means all your health care records, treatments, doctors and medications would be available to any doctor or hospital anywhere in the United States.

It is believed that creating a system like this could potentially save lives and cut back on the number of tests and procedures that are unnecessarily run because the hospital did not know that it was run before. However, skeptics believe that it could invade people’s privacy or even hinder the quality of healthcare people get. It is believed that if a doctor sees that the patient was in for a similar condition a few days ago they might error on the side of the previous doctor and health conditions could go unnoticed.

Whether or not this system will be put into place will be up for debate for a number of years.

Researching Your New Doctor

There are thousands of doctors in the United States. This can often make choosing the right one hard. Many patients do not know how to properly research the doctors that they are planning on using. By not properly researching their doctors these patients are often unsatisfied with the service and quality health care they receive.

If you are planning on switching doctors or looking for a new one here are some ways that you can research your doctor so that you can get the quality care you want and need.

Review Sites. There are various review sites that previous and current patients use to review their doctor. While sites like this were not intended for medical reviews people have started to use them to offer their opinion on their doctors and what they had to offer. This is a great way to get a first hand opinion on the doctor that you are considering. Just remember all reviews should be taken with a grain of salt as some people can often post negative reviews in an effort to hurt or harm the doctor’s reputation.

Online Research. Search engines are great sources for finding out information on your doctor. You can find out if they are affiliated with any organizations or even if they specialize in certain forms of medicine.

Medical Boards. You can always call your state medical board to check up on a doctor that you might be considering. Your medical board might not be able to tell you if there are any pending investigations but they can tell you any previous reports or problems they might have had. In fact, your state medical board is the best place to check up on a doctor that you are considering as they keep a record of all problems and complaints.

Cheaper Prescription Drugs: The Answer Is Across the Border

Purchasing prescription drugs in the United States is expensive. Most Americans have fewer funds available, as the economy has affected jobs and raised prices of basic bills on essentials such as food and gas. With many medicines being cheaper in Canada, many people travel across the border on a regular basis or use services like Canada 411 to find local Canadian businesses where they can get the same medications at a lower price.

The online information service also represents the trend of people getting cheaper medications from Canadian suppliers over the Internet. Cross-border delivery of pharmaceuticals is mostly illegal, but even Congress has estimated that permitting the re-importation of U.S. manufactured drugs could save a lot of money for Americans. In Canada, price controls are in place to keep pharmaceuticals affordable, and a change in the Homeland Security budget could block funds that would stop drugs, with less than a 90-day supply, from being re-imported.

Many Canadian cities are close to the border, and U.S. residents don’t have to go very far to find a pharmacy in places like Windsor, Ontario, if they live not far from the border. Providing a way to look up pharmacies by keyword or business name, informational resources on the Internet are a good starting point for anyone looking to save cash on their medications.

While there is opposition to some Congressional plans to legalize the trend of bringing medications back from Canada, others have pushed to defray the cost of medications. Retailers offering cheaper medications, and Medicare-based drug coverage, are available, but many Americans choose to cross the Canadian border for cheaper drugs. The trend may be decreasing, based on what pharmacists in Windsor say, but Canada 411 is available 24/7 for anyone that wants to find a pharmacy or any business in Canada quickly and easily over the Internet.

HIV and African-American Women

HIV and African-American Women

1. African American Women make up the fastest growing population to be infected with HIV the virus that leads to AIDS. Exposure to the virus is through unprotected sex, and or mixing bodily fluids with an infected person. Failure to use condoms and not knowing the status of a sexual partner can be life threatening.

2. More than Meets the Eye

Homosexuality is not as accepted in black culture as is in white culture. Taboos around being openly gay or lesbian in the black community are many. Out of this the over and sometimes misuse of the term down-low in reference to black men who are involved in committed relationships with women, but who secretly sleep with men.

3. Clubs and Pubs

Black men are less likely than their white counterparts to purchase Internet Porn and Phone Sex, but they spend lots of dollars at establishments that feature exotic dancers. Many men can’t leave the fantasy on the stage and engage in sex with random women. If you know this and insist on condoms that is something. If as black woman involved in what you think is a monogamous relationship it pays to protect yourself.

4. The Church and Change

The Black Church has aided black people in community and survival tactics for over a century. They are doing what they can but change is slow. Women have to be proactive about their bodies and their health. Knowing your status takes less than twenty minutes and only requires a quick swab of the inside of your cheek. Some churches are offering resources and testing to those seeking service. Others collect for AIDS victims and advocacy services that do outreach.

5. Resources
If you are become infected seek medical help and a support from family and friends or a support group. With healthy life changes and choices people are living healthier, longer and better informed lives.

Migraine Problem

Migraine is a rising problem in teens around the world. It is a vascular headache that happens because of the dilation of ventriles. This causes the nerve fibers in the brain to release chemicals into nerve fibers, more specifically the ones around the arteries. The nerves enlarge and pressurize the nerves to release these chemicals which cause headaches.

These Headaches are common in the sympathetic nervous system which is responsible for stress and pain responses of the body. Hence this specific action if the nerves gets in to action when under stress from blood vessels. There are many types of migraines which are mild to severe Head aches. They also combine vomiting, nausea and diarrhea along with the headache. It is also responsible for delaying the digestive process and hence any medication taken will take a very long time to be absorbed in to the blood system. Along with this it also decreases blood circulation which leads to cold feet and hands and weakness. The mind becomes extra sensitive to lights, sound and colors, which cause the intensity of the Headline: ache to increase.

This problem is more prevalent in females than males, mostly because of the hormonal changes which come with premenstrual syndrome every month. More than 17% of females in United States suffer from mild to severe migraines. This problem too like other is said to be linked to genetic roots and is inherited from parents. Treatments involve therapies because medications are not that effective. Relaxation, ice and bio feedback therapies are quite useful in treating migraines and are frequently used when in extreme pain. Sleeping also causes the brain to relax and there by reduce the intensity of the headache. Hypnosis has been used to successfully reduce the intensity of headaches but are not that widely used.

Mad Cow Disease

Mad cow disease is also known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. It first surfaced in 1990 in America and since has made the process of cattle slaughter more organized. This is one of the few diseases that is the result of a protein called prion. This protein is found inside the animal and is the abnormal type. They are produced excessively inside the intestines of the cattle and spreads to other parts of the cow. This disease spread to regions where cattle from united states were exported like Denmark and Australia. The Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy causes a disease called as Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease. Most of the people who consumed the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy protein meat were able to easily recover but about 150 people succumbed to this protein. The Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy protein attacks the central nervous system of a human beings and cattle. This causes mental problems such as emotional instability and complete nervous shutdown in human beings. It is assumed that Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy protein first developed in cows when cows consumed grass infected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy from scrappies. This led to the slow spread of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy from one cow to another. Though the first cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy were discovered in Britain in 1986, its effect on humans was not known until the 1990’s. The FDA has taken various steps to avoid the spread of this Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy protein further by monitoring cattle exchange and also maintaining hygienic environments where the meat is cut and processed for mass consumption. This disease was reported as far as in turkey, spain, south Africa and other places where ever the cows were sold. Many people develop resistance to this protein or the natural defenses of the body easily curb this proteins movement across the intestine walls. Only in rare cases has it been successful in causing infection.

Community Resources for Choosing Healthy Assisted Living Facilities

Image via Wikipedia

If you are responsible for helping a relative or family member choose assisted living facilities, you may not even know where to begin. Or you may have started looking online or through other sources and become overwhelmed with the choices that are available.

This is where community resources, such as municipal senior organizations, United Way-sponsered agencies, churches, and other places may be able to help. You can contact them to see if they have specific information about healthy assisted living in the area where your relative will be living.

For example, churches may sponsor certain assisted living facilities, and may provide help, both financially and in other ways, to those people who are affiliated with the particular denomination or faith—although this is usually not a requirement for residency. These places, however, might give your relative the chance to meet others who share the same or similar religious beliefs, as well as be able to attend worship services that are conducted along the same lines as those they are familiar with.

Some municipalities may also sponsor assisted living facilities. Living within the city or county may be a requirement, or the center may be open to anyone wanting to live there.

Other community resources may be able to help you look for facilities that can accommodate relatives who have special needs, but who are still able to live independently enough to be eligible for assisted living. In this way, you would be assured that your relative was housed with others who have similar problems and that the staff would be knowledgeable in care and treatment protocols concerning these conditions.

Some resources have pertinent information listed on various facilities so that you can see the amenities of several options at a glance. Then, if you find one that looks as though it would suit your relative’s needs, the resource would give contact information.
